Capitals fire Boudreau

The Washington Capitals have fired head coach Bruce Boudreau, replacing him with former player Dale Hunter.

Boudreau’s team got off to a hot start this year but has since faded, and criticism has mounted after each playoff failure. It seemed like only a matter of time until the team decided to go in another direction, although just one month into the season is a bit earlier than expected.

It will be interesting to see if the fiery, tough Hunter will be able to light a spark under one of the NHL’s most talented teams.

General manager George McPhee said the team’s play over the past week was the tipping point that forced the change.

Caps deal for center Arnott

By Bud L. Ellis

In Jason Arnott, the Washington Capitals land a scorer who knows what it’s like to raise the Stanley Cup.

At Monday’s trading deadline the Caps landed a No. 2 center to add offensive punch, trading David Steckel and next year’s second-round pick to New Jersey for Arnott. (Read More…)

Capitals smash Penguins, 3-0

The Washington Capitals continued their dominance over the Pittsburgh Penguins this season with a 3-0 shutout at the Verizon Center.

Defenseman Mike Green took a puck to the side of the face late in the first period and had to leave the game.

Despite the number of Pittsburgh injuries, Washington head coach Bruce Boudreau did not downplay his delight with the final score.

Boudreau said that the two teams simply don’t like each other and that it’s exactly how it should be. (Read More…)

Caps fight back to earn point in OT loss at Florida

By Bud L. Ellis

They did a good job of fighting back to pick up one point, but the Washington Capitals nonetheless were not happy with their early-game performance on Tuesday.

Opening up a two-game-in-two-day road trip through Florida, the Caps fell behind 3-0 early in the second period. Washington battled back but lost in overtime, 4-3. (Read More…)

Lightning knock Caps out of first with overtime victory

By Bud L. Ellis

The Washington Capitals woke up Wednesday morning looking up at somebody in the Southeast Division.

Tampa Bay came into the Verizon Center on Tuesday and came away with the first place in the division. Newly acquired goaltender Dwayne Roloson made 34 saves in his team debut, and Martin St. Louis scored the game’s lone goal in overtime as the Lightning beat the Caps for the first time this season, 1-0. Early goals doom Caps in loss to Bruins

By Bud L. Ellis

Caps experienced highest highs, lowest lows last season

By Bud L. Ellis

If there ever was a team that rode the highest of highs and the lowest of lows in one season, allow us to introduce the 2009-10 Washington Capitals as Exhibit A.

The Caps surged to the top of the NHL after the calendar flipped from 2009 to 2010, riding a 15-game winning streak that saw Washington not lose from Jan. 13 through Feb. 10. That franchise record winning streak challenged the NHL record and helped the Caps win the President’s Trophy for most points in the NHL for the first time in franchise history. (Read More…)

Top-seed Caps find themselves in unfamiliar position

By Bud L. Ellis

Fifty-four times out of 82 regular-season games, the Washington Capitals left the ice a winner. Certainly, just about everybody expected that familiar outcome as the NHL playoffs began.

But the Presidents’ Trophy winner woke up Friday morning staring at a playoff deficit. After a lackluster performance at Verizon Center resulted in a 3-2 overtime loss to No. 8-seed Montreal on Thursday in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals, the Caps spent Friday trying to figure out what happened … and making sure it doesn’t happen again.

With Game 2 on tap for Saturday, and with the series about to head north of the border for Games 3 and 4 in Montreal on Monday and Wednesday, the Caps cannot afford to have another disappointing performance.

Nobody was more disappointing for Washington in Game 1 than 50-goal scorer Alexander Ovechkin. For the first time in his 417-game NHL career, the Caps’ leading scorer did not register a goal, an assist or a shot on goal. Add in a power play that went 0-for-4, and it adds up to Washington being in a very unfamiliar position.

Washington lost just 11 times at home in the regular season, scored a league-best 318 goals and spent most of the second half looking like the hands-down favorite for the Stanley Cup. But another performance like Thursday would put the Caps in an 0-2 hole, and would mean Washington would have to win four out of five just to escape the first round.

Caps open playoffs with shocking OT loss to Canadians

By Bud L. Ellis

Suffice to say, nothing went according to script for the Washington Capitals in their playoff opener Thursday.

The team with the most points in the regular season found themselves scrambling all night about the eighth-seeded Montreal Canadians. And the scrambling wasn’t enough. Tomas Plekanec netted the game winner with 6:41 left in the first overtime, and the Caps found themselves on the losing end of a shocking 3-2 decision in their opening game of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals.

It was, to be blunt, a shocking night at the Verizon Center. The Caps were nowhere near as crisp as they were during the second half of the regular season, when they ran away from the rest of the field to salt away the Presidents Trophy and earn the top seed in the East.

Joe Corvo and Nicklas Backstrom scored goals for Washington. Jose Theodore made 45 saves. But Washington went 0-for-4 on the power play. Even more shocking: superstar scorer Alexander Ovechkin didn’t tally a shot, let alone a point, in this one.

Washington now faces a critical Game 2 at home Saturday night before the series shifts to Montreal next week.
