Caps’ march through March brings them to verge of East lead
By Bud L. Ellis
When the Washington Capitals step onto the ice in Philadelphia on Tuesday night, they will look to continue a scorching march through March.
Win in regulation, and the Caps will tie the Flyers for first place in the Eastern Conference as the end of the season draws close.
Washington opened the month with a 2-1 overtime win over the Islanders and have hardly slowed down since. Nine victories in 10 games, the only loss coming last Wednesday in a 3-2 defeat at Detroit.
Conversely, the Flyers – who lead the conference with 96 points – have gone 4-4-2 in its past 10 games.
The Caps have played two fewer games than Philadelphia, so a victory in Philly would be very helpful to the Caps’ hopes of repeating as regular-season Beasts of the East. Washington used a scorching hot January last season to grab first place in the East, and the Caps stayed there the rest of the season.
